This fall, Bishop Tobin’s ‘Keep the Heat On Challenge’ celebrates 10 winters of warming Rhode Islanders in need.
In October 2005, The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, began the “Keep the Heat On” challenge as home heating costs reached record highs. In announcing this heating assistance campaign, the Bishop presented a North Providence family with a $2,700 check on October 31, 2005, made payable to New England Gas to restore their utility service.
The ‘Keep the Heat On’ Fund is supported by generous donors. Since it was established in 2005, more than $1 million has been raised from generous individuals and organizations that has provided oil, natural gas and electric heating assistance to more than 3,600 households in Rhode Island.
